Theatre for children in Malmö

When can your child start?

At Malmö Kulturskola, the city's arts school, theatre courses start at age 8. In the beginner groups, children work playfully with body, voice, imagination and cooperation. Groups are divided by age, and in the first year the group does not put on a performance. The continuation course is for ages 9 to 18 and ends with a play in front of an audience. There, groups are divided by both age and experience, and the older the children are, the more they work on their own, for example learning scripts.

Theatre is also offered by adult education associations and in amateur theatre. Malmö's adult education associations run many dance and theatre courses for children and young people. Other providers may have other ages and ways of working, so look at the group's ages and ask what a term looks like.

Questions to ask the provider

Can your child try it? Ask whether there is a trial lesson and whether your child can start in the middle of the term.

What does it cost, and what is included? Ask what the term costs, how often the group meets and whether there are extra costs ahead of a performance.

Will there be a performance? Ask whether the group performs for an audience, when, and whether there will be extra rehearsals. This is good to know for children who want to be on stage, and for children who are not ready yet.

How can you support your child at home? In the older groups, children are expected to learn scripts on their own. Ask how much your child needs to practise at home and whether the group needs help with clothes or props.

What training do the leaders have? Ask what theatre training the leader has and whether they have experience with groups of children.

Do the leaders show a criminal records extract? The police issue a specific extract for people who will work with children outside school and childcare, for example in a role in an association. The leader shows it when the association or employer asks for it. Ask whether the theatre group does.

Theatre in Malmö

Malmö Kulturskola is the city's arts school. Its courses are for children and young people aged 7 to 18 who are registered as living in Malmö, and a course costs 300 kronor per term. Each child can take one course. Registration is open all year, and places are given out by registration date, age and the make-up of the group. Some beginner theatre courses are among those with the longest waiting lists. If you are on a waiting list, you must confirm every May that you want to stay on it. Each municipality decides its arts school's remit, so arts schools differ from one municipality to another.

Kul i Malmö is the city's free activities for children and young people. In earlier years there have been activities where children could try being on a theatre stage. The programme changes from year to year.

Kulturskolan's theatre courses can be paid for with Fritidskortet, the national leisure card. At other providers the card can only be used if they have joined the scheme, so ask the adult education association or theatre group. Read more about Fritidskortet in Malmö
