When can your child start?

It depends on the instrument. At Malmö Kulturskola, the city's arts school, violin, cello and clarinet start at age 7, alto recorder and accordion at 8, and piano, electric bass and saxophone at 9. Kulturskolan's courses are for children and young people aged 7 to 18. Other music schools and clubs may have other ages, so look at the group's ages.

At Kulturskolan all teaching is in groups, including instrument lessons. There is one lesson a week, lasting from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the course. Anyone taking a course can also play in an orchestra, choir or ensemble at no extra cost.

Each municipality decides its arts school's remit, so arts schools differ from one municipality to another. Taking part is voluntary.

Questions to ask the music school

Can your child try it? Ask whether there is a trial lesson or a day when your child can try different instruments.

What does it cost, and what is included? Ask what the term costs, how many lessons it has and whether sheet music or materials cost extra.

Does your child need their own instrument? Ask whether your child can rent an instrument at first. Kulturskolan rents out instruments. With Fritidskortet, the national leisure card, you can pay for renting equipment needed for the activity, for example a guitar.

How much should your child practise at home? Ask what the teacher expects and how you can help. Also ask when the concerts are.

How do you give up the place? At Kulturskolan you must give notice by 1 August before the autumn term and by 30 December before the spring term. Otherwise you pay for the next term. Ask what applies at other providers.

What training do the teachers have? Ask what music training the teacher has and how long they have taught children.

Does the music school ask for criminal records extracts? A teacher who will work with children outside school shows an extract from the criminal records register when the employer asks for it. Ask whether the music school asks its teachers for one.

Music in Malmö

Malmö Kulturskola is the city's arts school for children and young people registered as living in Malmö. A course costs 300 kronor per term, and renting an instrument costs 200 kronor per term. There is a sibling discount. You can register your child from 1 January in the year they reach the course's age, and each child can take one course. Piano, keyboard, violin, guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, percussion and singing group are among the courses with the longest waiting lists. If you are on a waiting list, you must confirm every May that you want to stay on it. Kulturskolan also points out that adult education associations run courses for children and young people.
