Floorball for children in Malmö

When can your child start?

Swedish floorball divides children and young people into levels according to its own development model. The model is based on a child's maturity rather than their age in years. The green level is for children aged 6 to 9, with the focus on the joy of movement. The blue level is for ages 9 to 12 and is about learning to train.

At the green level, children play 3 v 3 outfield players, with or without a goalkeeper. At the blue level it becomes 4 v 4 with a goalkeeper. The federation says a smaller court and fewer players give every child more touches of the ball, shots and saves, and that enjoyment and development matter more than winning.

Questions to ask the club

Can your child try it? Ask whether your child can join a few sessions before you decide, and whether a stick can be borrowed at first.

What does it cost, and what is included? Ask what the term or season costs, whether a membership fee is added, and whether matches, cups and travel cost extra.

What equipment is needed? All players in competitions for ages 16 and under must wear approved protective eyewear during matches, whatever their age. The stick must carry the international federation's approval mark and be the right length for the child. Ask the club what your child needs for training and what you should buy yourselves.

What happens on match days? The federation's handbook for the children's formats says coaches, players, referees and parents together decide whether floorball is safe for the children. Referees at these levels are often new to the role, and often teenagers. Ask whether parents are expected to help at the scorer's table, which keeps match time and the match report.

What training do the coaches have? The federation's first course for all coaches in children's and youth floorball is called Grundutbildning Barn & Ungdom. It gives a coaching licence valid for two years. The course has a particular focus on safe floorball, Trygg Innebandy. For coaches at the green level, the next step is the Steg 1 Grön course. Ask whether the coaches have taken the basic course.

Have all the team's coaches shown a criminal records extract? Floorball clubs, like all sports clubs, must check a limited extract from the criminal records register for leaders with direct and regular contact with children. This covers volunteers too, from as young as 15. Ask whether it covers the young assistant coaches in your child's team.

Floorball in Malmö

If you need equipment before you know whether your child wants to continue, you can borrow it for free at Fritidsbanken in Malmö, which lends sports and leisure equipment for two weeks. All the equipment is donated, and on the city's page you can search the stock before you go.

Kul i Malmö is the city's free activities for children and young people, including sport. Most are drop-in and need no membership, and the programme changes from year to year.
