Dance for children in Malmö

When can your child start dancing?

Children's dance is available even for young children. The Swedish DanceSport Federation has a dedicated course for leaders who teach children's dance for ages 3 to 6. At Malmö Kulturskola, the city's arts school, courses start at age 7. The Dansmix course for ages 7 to 9 teaches the basics in a playful way, with steps, balance and the children's own dances.

Dance groups are usually divided by age, style and level. Kulturskolan offers dance in many styles, from ballet to street dance, for different ages and levels. Some courses require previous dance experience, for example at least one year. So tell the school whether your child has danced before and for how long, so they end up in the right group.

Questions to ask the dance school or club

Can your child try it? Ask whether there is a trial lesson and whether your child can start in the middle of the term.

What does it cost, and what is included? Ask what the term costs, how many lessons it has and whether a membership fee is added.

What clothes are needed? Some styles have a dress code. Kulturskolan's ballet requires a black leotard, skin-coloured tights, ballet shoes and hair tied up. Ask before you buy anything.

Will there be a performance? Ask when the term's performance is, whether costumes or tickets cost extra, and whether you can watch an ordinary lesson before then.

What training do the teachers have? Ask what dance training the teacher has and whether they have experience with groups of children. The Swedish DanceSport Federation, for example, trains leaders for children's dance.

Who runs the dance school? Dance is offered by the arts school, adult education associations and private providers, and by clubs in the Swedish DanceSport Federation, which is part of the Swedish Sports Confederation. Dancers in the federation's clubs are insured during training, competitions and performances. At other providers, you can ask whether your child is insured.

Do the teachers show a criminal records extract? A leader who will work with children shows an extract from the criminal records register if the employer or association asks for it. Ask whether the dance school does.

Dance in Malmö

Malmö Kulturskola is the city's arts school. Its courses are for children and young people aged 7 to 18 who are registered as living in Malmö. A course costs 300 kronor per term, and each school year has at least 25 lessons, once a week. Each child can take one course. Registration is open all year, and places are given out by registration date, age and the make-up of the group. Some beginner dance courses are among those with the longest waiting lists. If you are on a waiting list, you must confirm every May that you want to stay on it.
